South Congregational Church (second) is dedicated.

January 8, 1862

Architect: Nathaniel Bradlee. Designed in the Romanesque Revival style, the brick building is located at 15 Union Park Street. The congregation was established in 1827 and met initially downtown Edward Everett Hale is the first minister in the new church. He preaches his last sermon on June 26, 1887, but does not officially resign until more than two years later, when he is succeeded by Edward Cummings, father of the poet e.e. Cummings. The congregation merges with the Hollis Street Church and moves to a church on Newbury Street in 1887. The Union Park building is purchased by a Jewish congregation in 1887.*
